Windows 11 26H2 system tray icons disappeared after a restart on my laptop. The applications were still running, including network services, but their notification area icons were missing. On October 10, 2026, I confirmed that uninstalling update KB5121794 restored all the missing icons. Here is what failed, what worked, and the exact rollback command.
Windows 11 26H2: System tray icons missing after restartWindows 11 26H2 tray icon issues appeared on my laptop a couple of days after I installed the feature update. I restarted Windows and noticed that only a few icons remained visible near the clock. Several application icons had vanished from the system tray.
Windows 11 notification area icons were missing even though the affected programs were still listed in Task Manager and continued to do their jobs. Some of these applications maintained important network connections, so terminating or restarting their processes was not an acceptable troubleshooting step.
October 10, 2026: This was a real, reproducible issue on my Windows 11 26H2 installation at the time of writing. It does not mean that every PC running this update is affected.
Windows 11 26H2 tray icon fixes that did not work- Restarting Windows. Two additional reboots did not bring the missing tray icons back.
- Restarting Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). The taskbar reloaded, but the invisible application icons stayed missing.
- Changing system tray visibility settings. I checked Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → Other system tray icons. Forcing the icons to appear through the standard Windows 11 interface did not fix the problem.
- Refreshing the notification area icon cache and registration. Cache and visibility adjustments, along with a
TaskbarCreatednotification, did not restore the missing icons.
Windows 11 26H2 icons were still missing after all of these attempts, even though the programs themselves were healthy and running.

KB5121794 is the Windows 11 26H2 enablement package, according to Microsoft's documentation. Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same core operating system; the enablement package activates the 26H2 features. I therefore decided to remove that package and return to the previous Windows version.

Windows 11 26H2 system tray bug reports should still be distinguished from an officially confirmed Microsoft issue: my successful rollback is a first-hand troubleshooting result, not proof that every 26H2 installation has the same defect.
